MCV is passionate about helping our clients develop a clear understanding of where they want to go together and an actionable plan for getting there. We design and facilitate collaborative planning processes undergirded by disciplines such as systems thinking, generative dialogue, appreciative inquiry and shared vision. MCV's approach integrates a balance between action and reflection and employs elements such as visual thinking to engage the range of learning and communication styles that invariably exist within families. Our processes are highly engaging, creative, enjoyable and effective. Every initiative is custom designed to support the client’s specific goals, culture and generational stage.
We listen and get to know you. Then we partner with you to design a collaborative process that will be as additive to your ultimate success as the resulting plan.
We operate with the following foundational beliefs:
Telling our stories is how we make sense and meaning out of where we've been and where we want to go in the world.
The greatest wisdom about how to move forward lies within the system; the art is in accessing it.
All voices are equally valuable and must be heard and honored.
A diversity of ideas and viewpoints vastly improves the outcome.
Resisting the temptation to look for quick fixes allows the effective, sustainable solutions to emerge.
Ignoring tough conversations eventually backfires.
Shared commitment and accountability are the result of creating a shared picture of the future.
Collaborative visioning and planning are inherently creative, inspiring, unifying and... oh yes, fun!
Typically our planning approach includes four phases:
Where You've Been
We believe that a sound plan for the future is grounded in a thorough understanding of the past. To help clients achieve this, we facilitate the creation of an Enterprise History Map that allows the family to tell your collective story about the family and enterprise to identify the patterns, values and operating principles that have driven behavior and outcomes over time. The group is then able to select the patterns, values and principles that define success going forward, as well as agree upon those that no longer serve the system and are best left behind.
Where You Are
Simply put, it's hard to get where you want to go if you don't know where you are today. Our planning processes include an honest assessment of the current reality both inside the client system and in the external environment. Through confidential interviews and learning conversations with family members, trusted advisors and staff, we identify areas of consensus around what is working well and what needs to be addressed, We emerge with clarity about alignment within the family system regarding the future and where consequential divergent views exist.
Where You Want to Go
"If you don't know where you're going, you might end up somewhere else." This quote by the iconic American baseball manager and coach Yogi Berra is timeless and universal in its applicability. Despite this, many families resist talking about where they want to go together, unsure of how to manage a range of passionately diverse ideas and conflicting goals. Our shared visioning process is predicated on the expression of the full spectrum of perspectives, hopes and concerns that exist within the family.. Through expert facilitation, what emerges is a vision of the future to which the family is committed and shares accountability for its success.
How You're Going to Get There
Understanding where you want to go isn't much good without a plan to get there. We work with our clients to develop a structured plan for how to move from your current reality to desired future state with clear goals, accountabilities and timelines.
